Brief Assessment of Stress and Eating (BASE)

Why the BASE?

After the development and implementation of the EPSI, our team created and validated a new 10-item screening tool to identify eating disorders and related mental health conditions in college healthcare and research settings, called The Brief Assessment of Stress and Eating, or BASE. The BASE is part of a larger, ongoing effort to create a universal screening tool for EDs and related psychopathology across a variety of populations. Through testing the BASE, we found that the eating disorder portion of the measure performed as well as, if not better than, the SCOFF (particularly in men) (Forbush et al., 2022). Given the need for brief, psychometrically strong, and unbiased ED screening tools in college students, the BASE helps address an unmet student healthcare need that we expect to contribute to improved identification of EDs on college campuses.
